Guns and Race

My post-liberal in-laws were rolling their eyes over an article in the local newspaper entitled “10 Year-Old Girl Shoots First Deer.” Older American liberals who have witnessed the arc of this nation’s strength and stability and decline of her cities into third-world chaos violence are not so keen on towing the “diversity”/ “immigration”/ “welfare” line as the younger liberals are. This statement, however, was a typical relapse of into old liberal patterns of reflexively mocking something so completely Eurpean-American..

“Post-liberals” concede that Whites are not at fault for the Black and Hispanic crime statistics or the destruction of the school system. Like any middle-of-the road Republican, they just choose to avoid “Race“ entirely. However, if you corner a Post-Liberal they will grant you that there is something to racial differences.

Their objection was that children should not be familiarized with firearms. I said that many hunters I know started young with a healthy respect for guns as tools. Also, that in the great contentious “gun” debate in this country, these people are not the problem.

The gun issue in this country is really a Race issue, and being that we can’t talk about Racial differences, we, therefore, talk about guns. It is as disingenuous an issue as arguing against spoons as the cause of America’s obesity problem - a big dishonest distraction.

They quickly changed the subject to how appalled they are at hunters who shoot for sport and do not dress, butcher, and eat what they kill (a subject we all can agree on).
